GRATZ COASTER FATALLY HURT BY TRUCK
Alvin Daniels Jr., 10 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Daniels of Gratz was fatally injured last Saturday afternoon when his sled ran beneath the wheels of a truck, allegedly operated by Charles H. Lingle of Linglestown.
Children of the community had been using an incline in an alley bordering the Daniel Hartman property in the west end of Gratz, for their coasting place. The side street runs at a right angle to Main Street, because of which danger, most of the coasters made the sharp turn and continued on the pavement paralleling Main Street.
The Daniels boy was taking his first ride, and apparently made the sharp turn continued into the street to run beneath the wheels of the truck. The vehicle, loaded with coal, was proceeding westward on Main Street. The driver was not held.
Alvin, who had observed his tenth birthday the day previous to the accident is survived by his parents, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Buffington, Gratz, and a grandmother, residing at Tremont.
Funeral services were held from the residence Tuesday morning with further services in the Gratz Lutheran and Reformed Church. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Dr. C. P. Wehr, pastor of the Lykens Valley Reformed Charge, and Rev. J. J. Fasnacht, Gratz Evangelical pastor, officiated.
Deputy Coroner Wren of Williamstown, who investigated, said death was due to a fractured skull and crushed chest. A date for an inquest is to be determined later.
