A 1913 newspaper photograph of famed aviators Walter E. Johnson and Earl Beers, of Bath, New York, who were responsible for bring the first aeroplane to the Lykens Valley.
The plane was transported by rail to Elizabethville, where it was reassembled on the farm of Alfred Bechtel, then flown to the Gratz Fair. By collecting a “purse,” citizens of Millersburg and Lykens, got the aviators to fly the airplane there as well.

The portrait of Johnson and Beers is from the Philadelphia Inquirer, 12 July 1913, via Newspapers.com, and was part of an article describing mishaps that occurred on a flight from Chicago to Detroit.
