On August 24, 1906, the Lykens Standard proposed that smoking be banned in the grand stands at the Lykens baseball park. In making the call, the Standard gave as a reason that the ladies in the stands were in danger of having their clothing catch fire.
SHOULD BE PROHIBITED
Smoking on the grand stands at the ball park should be prohibited, as it is not only very annoying to the ladies but extremely dangerous, as was demonstrated Monday when a lady’s skirt was set on fire either by ashes from a cigar or by the match used in lighting it. The light cotton clothing worn by ladies at this season of the year is highly inflammable and one warning should be sufficient to the manager of the park to avert a possible serious if not fatal accident. Of course, this warning is not necessary to GENTLEMEN. Look around over the grand stand at the next game and you can easily fine the other kind of fellow.
