In its November 16, 1906, edition, the Lykens Standard reported on a chicken theft in the borough, and in doing so reminded its readers to look after those who area easy targets for thieves.
FANCY CHICKENS STOLEN
Perhaps the finest flock of chickens in this section were until recently owned by R. Busse of North Street. They were of the Plymouth Rock variety, full bred, and Mr. Busse spared no pains nor expense to keep them in good condition, as the revenue derived from the sale of their eggs went a great way towards keeping something in the family larder. On Saturday night, October 13th [1906], twenty of the fowls were stolen, and last Saturday night four more were taken. Mr. Busse who is an old man, feels his loss keenly, as on account of failing health he was compelled to give up his work of painting. There are several persons around here who have no visible means of gaining a livelihood, and perhaps it would be well to keep an eye on them, as other similar raids have been made in this section, and others may be attempted.
