An undated photo of Claude S. Buffington, who was also known as “Globby.” He was born 1 January 1890, the son of John Jacob Buffington (1861-1925), a barber, and Clara L. [Kissinger] Buffington (1862-1938) of Gratz and Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He married Emma J. [Williard] Daniel (1884-1973), who had children with her first husband, Israel Daniel, who died in 1917. Claude and Emma had no children of their own.
Claude became a barber at the age of 12. His first customer was his grandfather, followed by his uncles George Hoffman and Eugene Hoffman. At the beginning, he charged 5 cents for a shave and 10 cents for a haircut. In 1906, he went to Cincinnati, Ohio, for training at the Moller School. After completing his course there, he worked for a time for his uncle Edward Umholtz, in Newton, Kansas, and afterward went to California and Oregon. In 1919, he came back to Gratz and took over his father’s barber shop. The shop then became known as Globby’s Barber Shop.”
Claude S. Buffington died in August 1969 and is buried at Gratz Union Cemetery.
