After a wave of robberies in Coaldale, west of Wiconisco, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, in December, 1906, the Lykens Standard seemed to call for vigilante justice in its December 21, 1906, edition:
ANOTHER ROBBERY
Saturday night, thieves broke into the cellar at the home of William Hoover in Coaldale, and stole all his jarred fruit and supply of potatoes for the Winter. They also attempted to get away with a can of lard and a stand of sauerkraut, bot for some reason dropped them in the yard, where they were found in the morning. Unfortunately the sauerkraut stand was overturned and the contents spilled on the ground.
In view of the fact that thefts of this kind are of almost nightly occurrence in this section, it should put people on their guard and endeavor to catch the guilty parties. It might also be well to keep a weather eye on a few in this neighborhood who toil not nor neither do they spin, and yet look sleek and fat and have money to spend. And if you catch the scoundrels, make an example of them. Too much leniency has heretofore been shown in these cases.
