A portrait of Daniel Newton Saltzer (1875-1938) in his Spanish American War uniform.
Daniel was born in Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, the son of John C. Saltzer (1844-1907) and Hannah [Falk] Saltzer (1848-1929). His mother’s maiden name is sometimes found as “Folk.”
On 23 July 1898, Daniel became a father to Bernice Miriam Saltzer. The child’s mother was Ida Minerva Artz (1872-1958). Ida later married Sylvester Wilson Hoffman (1880-1954).
During the Spanish American War, Daniel served in the cavalry. In 1899 he was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas.
Afterward, on 14 June 1903, he married Catherine Regina “Kate” Dietz (1885-1954). There were no known children of this marriage.
