DOG ATTACKS WICONISCO LADY LAST FRIDAY
A Wiconisco woman was admitted to Polyclinic Hospital on Friday after her dog turned on her and mauled her, hospital authorities reported.
Mrs. Gertrude W. Gwyther, 78, of 426 Center Street, Wiconisco, was reported in serious condition as a result of the attack which was halted only when it was shot and killed by a neighbor, authorities said.
According to local State Police who investigated the incident, D. Clark Girton of 416 W. Market Street, Williamstown, manager of the A & P store in Lykens, was delivering groceries to the house Friday afternoon when he discovered the dog attacking Mrs. Gwyther.
He attempted to pull the dog off the women and was bitten on both hands, police reported. The dog escaped from his grasp and again attacked Mrs. Gwyther before she was able to close herself inside the house, they said.
George Long, of 419 Center Street, Wiconisco, arrived on the scene of the attack, pulled the dog away from Mrs. Gwyther and shot it with his 12-gauge shotgun, according to the report.
Mrs. Gwyther was taken to Polyclinic Hospital in the Lykens–Wiconisco Ambulance. Girton saw a private doctor to care for the bites he received, police reported.
The dog, which was described as a mixed-breed animal, was taken by State Police to the state’s Summerdale animal laboratory for rabies tests.
