Donald Klinger was born in Hegins, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, in 1947. He was a graduate of Tri-Valley High School and then attended Rider University at Lawrenceville, New Jersey, where he was a leader on the baseball team.
Klinger was drafted by the Montreal Expos of the National League in 1969 and played professionally in 1969 and 1970 in the Gulf Coast League, Florida Instructional League North and the Southern League. His positions were second base, third base and outfield.
