Doris [Hoover] Troutman
MILLERSBURG– Doris Hoover Troutman passed away from heart failure October 3, 2020. As was her wish, she spent her last days in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family, as was her wish. She was born in Elizabethville, Pennsylvania to Hannah R. Hoover and Reynolds O. Hoover on December 21, 1929.
She was predeceased by her parents and her siblings, Jean [Hoover] Brandt, Robert Hoover, and Jack Hoover, as well as her infant daughters.
She graduated from Elizabethville High School in 1947where she excelled as a student and an athlete, averaging 21 points per game on the basketball team. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from Abington Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. Her nursing career was diverse, practicing at Harrisburg Hospital, Dr. Hottenstiens’ offices, and Diakon Lutheran Long Term Care facility. She volunteered many summers as a clinic nurse for migrant children in Dauphin County. She enjoyed using her big heart and helping hands to aid others. Doris retired from Nursing at 72 years old.
Doris married her high school sweetheart Marvin Troutman in 1951. They have three living children; Trudy Withers (Paul Withers), Gina DiSanto and Van Troutman. She has seven beloved grandchildren… and two great-grandchildren.
Her smile and laughter filled the room when she was with her grandchildren. Along with her nursing career, Doris and Marvin entered into the movie theatre business in 1955. For six decades they grew their business from the Colonnade Theatre in Millersburg to 79 screens throughout central Pennsylvania. Born to meager beginnings, Doris used her tireless work ethic, passion, and dedication to become successful in her life. As a working woman in the mid to late 1900s, she has inspired her family and many women who knew her to never take no for an answer, to dream their biggest dreams, and to follow them through with hard work.
Doris always made time to give back to her community and church. Volunteering and devoting her time and energy to the, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, junior church choir, bible school, Millersburg Civic Club, VFW Auxiliary, National Association of Theatre Owners, and National Association of Concessionaires. Doris was happiest when she was outside walking in the woods, tending to her flowers, and watching the birds. She loved the ocean; swimming, having her toes in the sand, and picking up shells. Doris and Marvin spent many years wintering on Marco Island, Florida, and enjoying the colorful sunsets together…..
Due to current state regulations an outdoor viewing and funeral service, by Reverend Mark Hoffman, will be held at the Sky-Vu Drive In Theatre, Route 25, Gratz, Pennsylvania.
Viewing at Sky-Vu on Thursday, Oct 8, 2020 beginning at 10:30 am followed by a service and luncheon. Masks are encouraged.
Internment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery Millersburg at the convenience of the family.
