A photograph taken after 1902 (later colorized) of the Elizabethville Tannery, later incorporated as the Eagle Tanning Company, about one mile east of Elizabethville in Washington Township, Dauphin County,, Pennsylvania.
Identified in the photo (somewhat in order, left to right, but not all named):
Frank Bauder; Charles Bauder; Harry Bauder (5th from left); William A. Bauder; G. Fred Gaupp; Jacob Forney; Christian Gaupp (10th from left); George Bauder.
The following information is known about this business:
The Tannery, one mile east of town was built in 1860 by Augustus Bauder and was destroyed by fire in 1889. G. Fred Gaupp who worked for Mr. Bauder went to Middletown after the fire, returned in 1892 and built a tannery on the site of the original one. Several years later Mr. Gaupp and David Snyder formed a partnership. In 1902 the business was incorporated by G. Fred Gaupp, Christian Gaupp, Allen Swab, Mark Swab, and Milton Moyer and operated as the Eagle Tanning Company. Only harness leather was made and when horses were replaced by machinery and large tanneries absorbed small ones the business was discontinued about 1914.
