By 1870, the second public school building at the southeast corner of Broad and Bender Streets, Elizabethville, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, became too small and it was replaced by a new brick building on the northwest corner of Main and Church Streets (currently 201-203 West Main Street).
Winter school terms were for five months and were usually followed by seminary sessions in the spring.
In the late 1870s, an additional room was added to this brick building increasing the dimensions to 35 x 50 feet. By 1884, a second story and outside stairway were added. This second story became the town’s first high school, but there are no records of any high school graduation until 1896.
In 1894, construction was begun on a two-story brick building at the north side of West Broad Street (currently 45 W. Broad Street). When that building was completed, the building at Main and Church Streets was sold to George W. Uhler, who razed it in 1895.
The location of the second school is marked on the map cut above. The site is adjacent to the present Salem Lutheran Church and across the street from the Salem United Church of Christ.
