Eight African Americans have been identified in the Census of 1840, Mifflin Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. All eight were in the same household, that of Peter Crabb, identified as Peter Crapp on the census sheet. This is believed to be the same Peter Crabb who was found in the Census of 1830 for Gratztown, Lykens Township, Dauphin County. The census page, shown above, indicates the number of individuals in each age group, of “free colored persons” divided by males and females.
The interpretation of the original page, shown above was provided by Ancestry.com. and incorrectly reports the individual as Peter Trapp.
Total of all individuals in the household was 8, all listed as “free colored persons.” The head of the household, Peter Crabb, is believed to be the one individual identified as between the ages of 55 through 99. His wife, is believed to be the individual identified as between the ages of 24 through 35. The children as follows: Males under 10, 2; Females under 10, 2; Males between 10 and 23, 1; Females between 10 and 23, 1.
The age of Peter Crabb is consistent with his estimated birth year of 1787, which would have made him about 53 in 1840, although he was enumerated in the age group 55 though 99. The wife of Peter was believed to have been born about 1803, which would have made her about 37 in 1840, although she was enumerated in the age group 24 through 35.
