FIRST SETTLER IN HERNDON DIES IN HIS 90th YEAR
Funeral services for George Deppen, 89 years old, who died Sunday evening at the home of Charles Kahler, at Herndon, were held Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock at the residence, the Rev. W. W. Kramlich officiating. Burial was made in the Herndon Cemetery.
Surviving are ten children: Attorney George E. Deppen, Mrs. B. H. Rubendall, Ernest Deppen and Miss Carrie Deppen, of Sunbury; Mrs. H. E. Snyder of Harrisburg; Mrs. J. H. Mehard of Youngstown, Ohio; Mrs. H. J. Engle, Charles Deppen; Earl Deppen and Harry Deppen of Herndon. A brother Joseph Deppen of Mt. Carmel and Mrs. Louise Muth of Red Cross who are both past 90 years of age, also survive.
Mr. Deppen was the oldest resident of Herndon. He was born and raised at Herndon and resided there all his life except one year when his parents moved to Ohio. He was the first settler in the town. He conducted a grain and coal business for more than sixty years, during which time he became wealthy and widely known in the lower end of Northumberland County.
Mr. Deppen was Justice of the Peace for fifty-five years, conducting the office in a very creditable manner. His advice and counsel were frequently sought and always cheerfully given. He had been in ill health for some time but was up and around until three weeks ago, when he became bedfast. His wife preceded him to the grave some twenty years ago and since then he made his home with his children.
