JOHN WOLFE FATALLY INJURED IN THE HARRISBURG YARD [Lykens Standard, September 21, 1906].
John Wolfe, of Harrisburg, a brakeman on the Pennsylvania railroad, was run over by a shifter in the yard at Harrisburg on Monday morning, receiving injuries which caused his death that evening at 5:05 o’clock at the Harrisburg Hospital. Wolfe was on his first day’s duty as a regular brakeman, having just been promoted. He was turning a switch for his engine and failed to see the shifter approaching. He was run over and his left arm was broken and his leg horribly crushed at the hip joint and thigh. Wolfe talked a bit at the hospital before his death. He told of his promotion and added: “It won’t do me much good.” He was not allowed to talk much, as it was necessary for him to save all his strength in order that his parents, W. H. Wolfe and wife of Gratz, could see him before his death. He was 22 years old. The remains were sent to his home near Gratz on Tuesday, and the funeral was held yesterday afternoon. Burial was made in the Hoffman’s Church Cemetery [Lykens Township].
