A 2010 photograph of the section of the Gratz History Mural featuring the Union House, a hotel that was on the main square in Gratz from the 1880s until it was destroyed in the Great Gratz Fire of 1924. The predecessor of this hotel was the Rising Sun, an early inn dating back to the early days of Gratz. The Rising Sun was destroyed by fire in 1885. The current building at this site was built as the Gratz Community Center, but later became a restaurant with several name changes over the years until the last one finally closed just a few years ago.
On May 30, 2005, a 75-foot wall mural entitled “A Walk Through History” was dedicated in the Community Building in Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, commemorating 200 years of Gratz history and recognizing the people from the past and present who together have made Gratz “a place to call home.” A small portion of the mural is pictured above.
