A brief notice in the Lykens Register of 5 May 1898 noted the procession in Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, to celebrate the naval victory by the U. S. Fleet over the Spanish:
A demonstration in honor of the United States fleet, victorious over that of the Spanish, was witnessed in our streets on Monday night. It infused a spirit of patriotism as was shown by the universal participation on this occasion. The procession was headed by out Citizens’ Cornet Band, followed by a stream of men and boys waving their flags and cheering for “Old Glory.” The procession was under the command of Captain Cyrene T. Bowman, one of the old boys in blue of ’62. May God speed the day when all true and patriotic hearts with one accord may shout for joy when the iron grasp of Spain upon Cuba shall be loosed.
