A photograph of two of the delegates from Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, Local 363, who attended the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in December 1945. The woman on the left is not identified; the woman on the right is Helen [Hoffman] Dietrich of Specktown, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Local 363 represented the employees of the Gratz Shirt Factory.
While in Atlantic City, the women attending this convention stayed at the Verona Guest House on Michigan Avenue, four blocks from the Convention Hall where the meetings were held. At the time, the Verona was owned and operated by Mary Gasbarro, the mother-in-law of Helen’s daughter, Kathryn E. [Dietrich] Gasbarro. In the 1960s and 1970s, this guest house became a popular summer vacation spot for residents of the Lykens Valley.
The snapshots shown here were taken on the Atlantic City boardwalk and also picture Helen’s grandson.
