A photograph taken around the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries of a house on the southwest corner of Market Street and West Street, Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, original Gratz lot #82. The house no longer exists.
The photo shows a three-and-a-half story house, but more recent photos, taken around 1997, show it as a two-and-a-half-story house.
About 1937, West Street was the old road out of Gratz to Loyalton, but was replaced by the new road which cut in on an angle to Market Street. The owners of the house at the time decided to mound up ground around the house, which made the old first floor the basement.
The Shell gas station and convenience store include Lot #82 as it appears today (Google street-view photo above). The old house stood on what is now additional parking for the business (right of center in photo). Behind the Shell sign is the entrance to the “new” Specktown Road, which leads to Loyalton. West Street can be seen at left.
