A photograph dated 1903 of the new home built on the southeast corner of Market and Center Streets, Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The house replaced the Lykens Hotel, a two story frame house with tavern and an ice house, all of which by 1887 was in a dilapidated condition. In May 1886 a fire added to the deterioration of the property. John Hess bought the property with the intention of remodeling it, but later he changed his mind and tore down the structures and built the large home pictured above.
The persons standing in front of the home are not identified.
