A cover mailed from the Gratz Post Office, Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, on 26 November 1857 to Mr. John Wiest in Philadelphia.
The stamp on this cover which was issued in 1857 and is identified as Scott Type A21, bears a pen cancel which was applied by the postmaster, Daniel Lehr. The post office was located on the northeast corner of what is now Market and Center Streets in Gratz, in Lehr’s store. Lehr began serving as the Postmaster of Gratz in 1844 and after about fifteen months, he was replaced by Jacob Buffington. However, after four years, Lehr again became postmaster and served about seventeen years – which included the time the above letter was posted as well as the years of the Civil War.
