A photo taken about 1995 of the United States Post Office at Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. This was the first building specifically built as a post office and was opened in 1984. The prior post offices were either in stores or resident homes.
The Gratz Post Office is located on the southwest corner of Center Street and South Street, which is also know as South Alley. It is believed that this site was intended to be the Gratz train station on the proposed (in 1910), but later defunct, Midland Pennsylvania Railroad.
Today, Gratz residents have free home delivery through the rural letter carrier based in Lykens, Dauphin County, but some residents prefer to pay for post office boxes in Gratz in order to help keep the community identity.
