A street-view photograph taken in July 2018 of the landmark brick building once known as Klingman’s Store, corner of Market Street and 4th Street, Halifax, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
According to information from the Halifax Area Historical Society, it was built in 1864 (during the Civil War) by Abraham Fortenbaugh and was originally known as the Mammoth Store. In 1894, when Fortenbaugh sold the building to John Klingman, it then became known as Klingman’s Store. The building remained an active store until the 1970s when it was then remodeled and converted into apartments by Kenneth Shoop. Less than two years ago, PENNDOT demolished the building so that trucks could more easily make the turn at the intersection.
