FAILS IN MOVE TO REGAIN BRIDE OF 14
William M. Hoffman, 19, of near Halifax, was held in $500 bail for court Thursday by Alderman Charters on a charge of taking a girl under 16 years of age for marriage without consent of her parents.
Meanwhile, his 14-year-old bride who was Sara Edith Amich, also of near Halifax, remained with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Amich. The Dauphin County Court earlier had continued Hoffman’s habeas corpus action which he instituted to regain his wife whose parents separated the pair on their wedding day.
The young bride told Judge Wickersham that she loved her husband but she said “I guess I had better go back to my parents.”
Testimony at the court hearing revealed that the pair eloped August 16 to Frederick, Maryland, returning to Hoffman’s home the same day. The girl’s father took the girl back to her home at once. Then Hoffman, failing in other ways, started the habeas corpus action to regain his bride.
Hoffman asserted that Edith told him that she was 18 years old and that she gave that age to the clerk in the marriage bureau.
