A snapshot photograph taken about 1956 in the parking lot behind the Verona Guest House, Atlantic City, New Jersey. Pictured are William E. Gasbarro, James T. Gasbarro, and Hannah L. [Riegle] McMillan (1904-1977), 1st cousins, 2 times removed. Note the name “Verona” painted on the fence. At the time the photograph was taken, Hannah was working as the main telephone operator at Atlantic City’s Hotel Morton and living there in the dormitory provided for its female workers.
“Aunt Hannah,” as she was affectionately (and respectfully) known by the young boys pictured was a frequent visitor to the “Verona” which was operated by her 1st cousin, 1 time removed, Kathryn [Dietrich] Gasbarro (1915-2003). Both Kathryn and Hannah were born in Specktown.
During the 1960s and 1970’s, the “Verona” heavily advertised in the Lykens Valley newspapers. Also post cards were sent into the valley urging residents to make their reservations early. The guest house was located less than two blocks from the Atlantic City boardwalk and beach and each summer was filled with Lykens Valley residents.
