Millersburg Editor Passed Away Sunday
Hay W. Bowman, age 75 years, who had been owner, published and editor of the Millersburg Sentinel more than fifty years, died Sunday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank G. Campbell, Millersburg, where he resided. Mr. Bowman had been in failing health more than a year.
He was a son of the late Francis S. Bowman and Mary [Wirt] Bowman and was born in Millersburg, 30 June 1870.
He became associated with the Sentinel in June 1884 when the paper was established by his father, an attorney. In 1895, Mr. Bowman became owner of the Sentinel and continued in that capacity to the time of his death.
His wife, who was Nellie M. Bowman, daughter of Attorney and Mrs. Simon S. Bowman, died in 1903. Three children, Mary Bowman, Sumner Bowman, and Francis Bowman, also preceded him in death.
During his life, Mr. Bowman was actively identified with many civic movements. At the time of his death he was president of the Oak Hill Cemetery Association. He had also served as president of the Millersburg Band Commission, president of the Millersburg Motor Club, and had also been a director of the Johnson Memorial Library and Gymnasium Association.
A member of the Methodist Church, Mr. Bowman was at the time of his death a trustee and member of the board of stewards of the church. He had also held various other offices in the church.
In 1926 Mr. Bowman was named Chief Burgess of Millersburg to fill an unexpired term. In 1929 he was elected for a four year term, and in 1933 was re-elected for another term.
During World War I, Mr. Bowman served as chairman of all Liberty Loan campaigns in that borough, and also assisted the Exemption Board during that war.
He is survived by one daughter, Ruth Bowman, Mrs. Merle E. Johnson, of Harrisburg; two grandsons, and a brother, the Rev. Dr. Linn Bowman, pastor of the Spring Garden Street Methodist Church, Philadelphia.
Funeral services were held from the Sterner Funeral Home, Millersburg, at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. S. T. Dundore, pastor of Hebron United Brethren Church, Millersburg, officiated. Interment was made in Oak Hill Cemetery.
