The text of the article accompanying the picture is as follows:
In the picture above is seen the Hegins Township High School Band, which has been winning many laurels for its home school, being the recent winner in the county musical contest and in the regional contest of the Eastern Division, after which they entered the State Contest which was held at Pittsburgh on April 29th and made a very fine showing.
The leader of the band is Bartel Schade [Barthel Shade], who has developed a splendid organization. The Hegins Township Schools introduced the teaching of instrumental music as a regular subject of the curriculum in 1921. The teaching begins in the fourth grade and is continued through the grades of the elementary school and the high school.
Eighty-five members of the high school, about one third of the enrollment, are at present taking instruction in instrumental music from Mr. Schade. The instruction given by classes and individually.
From these pupils, Mr. Schade has selected and organized the present High School Ban of 38 members. Most of the instruments belong to the pupils. Some belong to the school, purchased by funds raised by the school. The uniforms were also purchased from funds raised by the school.
The school also has a very fine orchestra. These organizations give frequent concerts and furnish the music at the school attractions. They will furnish the music for the pageant “Wakefield” which the schools will stage at the commencement program. This is the pageant which was rendered in Washington, D.C. as the outstanding feature of the Washington Bicentennial Celebration last February.
Hegins may well be proud of its band and Pottsville will be given the opportunity of hearing it for, at the invitation of Samuel Friedman of the Capitol Theatre, they will give a 20 minute concert at the Capitol Wednesday evening, May 11th, at nine o’clock.
