A photograph taken around 1900 of Homer Blyler and his horse “Doc”, of Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Blyler was born in Gratz, January 22, 1884, and died in Sharon, Massachusetts, May 1970.
When Homer was a teenager, his family mover to Reading. He was widely known as an excellent baseball player, particularly as a pitcher, and continued playing with organized area teams well into the 1920s.
In their June 23, 1905, edition, the Lykens Standard reported on an almost perfect game pitched by Homer Blyler:
BLYLER PITCHES A SENSATIONAL GAME
Homer Blyler, son of D. C. Blyler of Reading, formerly of Gratz, pitched a sensational game of ball for the All-Scholastic team of Reading, recently. In the nine full innings he did not allow the heavy hitters of St. peter’ aggregation a single run or hit. The score at the finish of the game was second base. Nothing that looked like a safe single was made.
