The above photo was found in a box of keepsakes belonging to Hannah [Rickert] Riegle (1847-1919), Specktown, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.. While it was identified by several family members as Hannah’s sister, Catherine “Katie” [Rickert] Woland (1844-1909), none of the persons involved in the identification were alive when Katie was alive. A process of elimination was used to determine that this was Katie, the other sisters of Hannah being eliminated by positive identification in other photos.
Katie [Rickert] Woland was first married to Philip S. Hoffman (1844-1878), who was killed in the mines on 21 November 1878. One child was born to that union, Hattle Phillipe May Hoffman (1879-1937).
Katie then married John Woland (1830-1901), who had first been married to Lydia Hoffman (1835-1884).
The photograph above was taken at the Roshon Galleries) in 1891 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, according to information of the back.
There is another picture of someone also identified as Katie Woland on some Ancestry.com trees. The face is shown below. Are they the same person?
There is no provenance to this second picture.
During her lifetime, Katie Woland lived in Lykens Township, Wiconisco Township, and Lykens Borough.
