A photograph of John Gunderman taken in the 1890s. John was born 26 December 1837 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, the son of Michael Gunderman (1809-1889) and Rebecca Minnich [Riegle] Gunderman (1817-1892). He married Amanda Rickert (1845-1893) and with her had at least nine known children. John’s wife and mother connect him to two pioneering Lykens Valley families, the Riegle’s and the Rickert’s.
During the Civil War John Gunderman was drafted into the 177th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company K, and served as a Private from 1862 to 1863. His honorable discharge qualified him for a pension, which he collected to his death, which occurred on 7 August 1913. He is buried at the St. Peter (Hoffman) Cemetery in Lykens Township.
John Gunderman lived and worked in Wiconisco Township and Lykens Township, Dauphin County.
