A portrait of John Monroe Stiely and Ruth Rebecca [Riegle] Stiely.
John Monroe Stiely was born 28 March 1884, the son of Reuben H. Stiely (1847-1921) and Sarah Jane [Kissinger] Stiely (1850-1922). He married Ruth Rebecca Riegle.
Ruth Rebecca [Riegle] Stiely was born 20 May 1895 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of William Harvey Riegle (1868-1900) and Catherine Jane “Katie” [Boyer] Riegle (1869-1947).
John died as a result of injuries sustained in an accident in a saw mill, 14 May 1934. According to his death certificate, which was signed by Dr. G. M. Schminky of Harrisburg, he slipped at the saw mill, was violently wrenched into the mechanism causing severe injuries to his spinal ligaments and muscles, and then “decided relief.” At the time of his death he was also suffering from depression and distress from losses he had incurred in the stock market, from which he saw no path to recovery.
Ruth survived him as a widow and lived for about 50 years. She died on 15 March 1984. For some of that time, she supported herself by teaching.
