A brief article from the Lykens Standard, July 24, 1925, indicating that the Ku Klux Klan had chartered a train to depart from Lykens, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, on August 8, 1925, and arrive in Washington, D. C. for the National Convention of the Klan.
K. K. K. CHARTER TRAIN TO WASHINGTON
Announcement was made Tuesday that a special train was chartered on the Pennsylvania line to run between Lykens and Washington, D. C., on Saturday, August 8th, when the National Convention of the Order will be held and practically every lodge thruout the country will be represented. The information given makes accommodation for between 600 and 700 people. The train is scheduled to leave the Lykens station Saturday morning at 12:05 o’clock and arrive in Washington, D. C., about 6:00 A. M., making stops at Elizabethville, Millersburg and Halifax.
At the time of this writing it is was known how many people took advantage of this charter train.
This post is a continuation of the reporting on hate groups that were active in the Lykens Valley area. It was a widely known fact that the Ku Klux Klan had a significant presence in the Lykens Valley and adjacent valleys during the early years of the 20th Century. This iteration of the Klan was strongly white supremacist and was opposed to equal rights for African Americans, Catholics, Jews, and immigrants.
