A photograph of Lee N. Whitaker in his World War II uniform. The photo is from the Sweigard General Store World War II Collection, Matamoras, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
Whitaker was born November 21, 1920, in Halifax, Dauphin County. He died on August 12, 2017, in Harrisburg. He is buried at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.
The photo was one of more than 60 photos collected by Gladys [Parmer] Sweigard (1922-2022), owner of the general store. The photos represented the active duty military soldiers and sailors who used the store phone, one of the only phones in the rural area, to make contact with their families during the war. Gladys posted all the photos on the wall near the phone. The collection was made available to David Hause of the Halifax area by Lynette [Sweigard] Schlegel, daughter of Gladys Sweigard. All of the photos are now posted on individual Findagrave Memorials. They also have been posted to family trees on Ancestry.com.
