Tropical Storm Agnes, June 1972, caused significant damage to the home of Raymond Fisher, Loyalton, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania – and almost resulted in the loss of his life. The following memory was told by a family mamber:
A few residents in Loyalton were particularly hard hit by rushing water from Wiconisco Creek. Some folks left their homes during the storm, but Raymond Fisher who lived alone decided to stay. Eventually, as the water rose higher and higher from Wiconisco Creek, he decided he had no alternative but to move to higher ground. He gathered a few necessities, a chamber pot, crackers, a six-pack of soda, a pack of cookies and a calendar and retreated to the second floor of his house. He was trapped there for more than two days. A National Guard helicopter circled the house faster than Raymond could move to a window to be seen. Neighbors and friends made several rescue attempts, but the water was too swift. When the water velocity finally diminished he was removed by boat.
