A photograph of the Bowman home (duplex) on Main Street, Lykens, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, taken on 4 July 1913. The photo shows the Bowman family at right and the family who rented the other half of the duplex at left. At the fence, holding a child, is William Valentine Bowman (1854-1933). His granddaughter, is standing at the gate (long, dark hair).
The occasion celebrated here was more than just Independence Day. It marked the homecoming and Diamond Jubilee of the Borough of Lykens.
The Lykens Standard reported that the first price for best decorated home was given to William Valentine Bowman:
For finest decorated business place, Reiff & Helt, $10.00. For finest decorated residence, W. V. Bowman, $5.00.
