Lykens Catholic High School, 1940

COMMENCEMENT ACTIVITIES OF ST. MARY’S HELD

The Commencement exercises of Lykens Catholic High School were held Monday evening in St. mary’s Church. Rev. Lawrence F. Schott of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, delivered an inspiring address to the graduates. Rev. Leo B. Kirchner, former pastor of St. Mary’s presented the diplomas to the following:

Robert Bobroski; John Boyle; Joseph Hoffman; Robert Schmick; John Taylor; Joan Betz; Dorothy Bobroski; Eugenia Kolvick; Pauline Kolvick; Christina Yentsch.

Rev. Edward J. Shanahan, pastor, announced the names of the graduates, the honor students and also the winners in a competitive essay, in which all the student of the High School recently participated. Each winner was given a valuable book donated by Father Shanahan.

The honor students in the Senior Class were: Joseph Hoffman, first honors; Joan Betz, second honors; Eugenia Kolvick, third honors.

However the competition was so close that each respective student gained only a fraction of a point over the other.

The essay winners were:

Senior – Eugenia Kolvick; Honorable mention – Pauline Kolvick, Joseph Hoffman.

Junior – Margaret Kolvick; Honorable mention – Margaret Fisher, Maria Kute, Anna Louise Schmick.

Sophomore – Marie Stuppy; Honorable mention – John Betz, John Flynn, George Breit.

Freshman – George Zilinski; Honorable mention – Anna Hentz; James Kolvick; Helen Lakatos.

Tuesday evening, at 7:30 P. M., Class Night exercises were held in St. Mary’s Auditorium. After the program the student body enjoyed a luncheon which was followed by a dance in honor of the Senior Class.
