From the Sunbury Daily Item, July 3, 1989:
‘GYPSIES’ BLAMED FOR THEFT
LYKENS – A group of people described as gypsies created a disturbance Sunday at a Lykens grocery store, allowing time for one of the visitors to seal approximately $70,00 in cash and checks, state police said.
The band of travelers left Don’s Food Rite store before the theft was discovered and drove east on Route 209 in three vehicles with Illinois registrations.
The theft occurred from 5:30 to 5:40 p. m. when the group entered the store and created a diversion, luring a clerk from the office. One person then entered the unattended office and took the cash and checks from an unlocked safe, police said. The travelers had been seen in several other businesses on Sunday, police said. The were traveling in two gray cars and one maroon car. Anyone with information is asked to contact state police at Lykens.
