J. S. REIFF
Furniture Dealer, Undertaker, of Lykens
The name of Reiff has been identified with furniture business from the earliest history of the town. Jacob Reiff, a sturdy German having settled here and carried on the trade in the early 1850s, making all his own goods, as at that time the product of the large factories in the city had not yet invaded the rural districts to any extent and mail order houses and soap clubs were unknown. Mr. Reiff naturally instructed his sons in the same trade, and upon his death, when John S. Reiff was a young man, upon him devolved the duty of continuing the business. He has carried it on ever since, in connection with the undertaking business, and today has the largest and best stocked furniture establishment in the Upper End. Mr. Reiff has also always taken a deep interest in the town and contributed much toward its development. In politics he is a Republican and has served the borough as councilman and the county one term as sheriff.
