LYKENS KNITTING & MANUFACTURING COMPANY
W. Walter Duncan, President.
Of the three knitting mills contributing to the industrial resource of Lykens, this concern stands in a class by itself inasmuch as it is the only one whose energies are devoted exclusively to the manufacture of ladies’ fine gauge seamless hosiery. Established in June 1899 by W. Walter Duncan & Company, incorporated in 1905 as the Lykens Knitting and Manufacturing Company, with W. Walter Duncan as president, R. Coble, secretary and treasurer, its value to the borough is significant when it is understood that thirty-four hands are constantly employed and nearly $10,000 paid out every year in wages. The factory is equipped with every modern facility for the manufacture of a particularly fine grade of ladies’ seamless hosiery, and the work is so systematically arranged that the daily output averages 220 dozen pairs. One feature adopted by the management is especially commendable, and that is the patronage given other home industries. All the dyeing is done by the dye works in Wiconisco; all the boxes used in packing the product are made by the local box factory; in fact the company favors home trade in every way possible. Mr. Duncan, the company’s president, and active manager of the factory, is a young man of sterling qualities and excellent business sagacity, and highly regarded in the community. Mr. Coble is one of the borough’s foremost residents and leading citizens.
