This brief notice from the front page of the Lykens Standard, July 18, 1924, urged parents to take their children to the local Clinic for examination – prior to their return to school. The purpose of the Clinic visit was to identify and correct any “defects” in the children.
CHILDREN SHOULD BE EXAMINED
Miss Anna Smith, the Red Cross Nurse, requests that all Lykens children who expect to go to school this fall, should come to the Clinic for examination and should any physical defects be detected the nurse will confer with the parents and endeavor to have them corrected so that children will not start to school with a handicap. Perhaps eyes need attention, or children may have tonsils or adenoids which need attention now. The Red Cross stands ready to give you help along this line. Clinic at Lykens is open first and third Thursday each month and all babies and children under six years may have the benefit of it if parents are interested to send them. Clinic held in Civic Club room, back of Dr. Baker’s office.
