The Kissinger School in Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, is believed to be one of the oldest free schools in the township, second to the Hoffman School, which is believed to be the first that was established.
The photograph shown above was taken about 1955, about two years before the school ceased to exist. In 1957 the Lykens Township Board of Supervisors purchased the property. For a time after the building was no longer used as a school, it was occupied as offices and as a polling place for elections. But by 1971, the township had outgrown it and it was demolished and replaced by a new building which suffices until 1999, which until 1999 was sufficient for township needs. An additional building was constructed in that year .
As with most of the Lykens Township one-room schoolhouses, constructing a list of the teachers who were employed there is not easy, due in part to missing records. It is hoped that by presenting a list of known teachers, that blog readers will help to identify the teachers who are missing, will confirm the names of teachers who are identified for particular years, and will provide some of the missing photographs.
Help is requested from readers to fill in the missing years and make corrections and annotations. Please add information as comments to this blog post.
Also, Kissinger School pictures are sought for those years where they have not been posted here. Scans should be sent as e-mail attachments with permission to post on this site. If possible, please identify the year of the picture and any known persons.
For a prior listing the names of known teachers, see:
