A digitally restored card from the Salada School, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, from the school term 1895-1896.
At the end of the school year, students were given cards which had the names of all who attended during the year. Other souvenirs of attendance included class photos, individual student photos, report cards, and awards (which included certificate cards, achievement medals, etc.).
On the front side of this card are: (1) “Popular Education – The Power that Moves the World;” (2) a verse – “Ah me! those joyous days are gone! I little dreamt till they had flown, How fleeting were the hours;” and (3) “Presented to ________,” in this case, Guerney Umholtz. Also included on the front side of this card is a photograph of the teacher, Charles L. Hess.
On the reverse side of the card : (1) the dates of the term, 1895-1896; (2) a verse, “Let fate do her worst, there are moments of joy, Bright dreams of the past which she cannot destroy; Which come in the night time of sorrow and care, and bring back the features that joy used to wear.” — Moore; (3) Salada’s School, Lykens Township, Pennsylvania; (4) pupils names — males and females (separately); (5) school directors; (6) name of the county superintendent, and (7) the name of the teacher. The card supplier was Harry G. Phillips of Montoursville, Pennsylvania.
