A photograph of a typical mule stable in the mines, though not from the Short Mountain Colliery of the Lykens Valley Coal Company, Bear Gap, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
There was a mule stable at each of the first four of five levels of the Short Mountain mine. The mules were used to pull coal cars through the tunnels to the shaft elevator where they were then taken to the surface.
