Lynn Bendigo (1904-1949) – Prominent Orwin Resident Crushed by Truck

LYNN BENDIGO DIES UNDER TRUCK BODY

Sudden and tragic death dame to one of Orwin‘s best known residents on Wednesday morning at 7:30 o’clock. The lifeless body of Lynn L. Bendigo, 45 years, was discovered wedged between the body and frame of a coal dump truck standing in front of his general store at Orwin.

Besides conducting a store he owned a dump truck which he used to transport coal from the McNary strippings near Joliett, Wednesday morning, when he attempted to lower the body of the truck it apparently had frozen and would not lower. He obtained a shovel full of hot coals from a furnace and was holding it under the hydraulic cylinder of the truck when it suddenly dropped, pinning his body between the frame and the truck body. Passing men, on their way to work, discovered the man’s plight and quickly raised the truck body. Bendigo slumped to the road and was carried into his home. Dr. P. R. Evans was summoned and pronounced him dead. Death had apparently been caused by suffocation, as the full weight of the body rested across the lungs. The ody was released to funeral director Dreisgacker by Deputy Coroner Leroy F. Kaufman, of Tower City.

Mr. Bendigo was son of Harry Bendigo and his wife nee Annie Kessler, and was born and reared in Orwin. He was married to Miss Viola Mease who survives, with three children: Gene Bendigo; Carol Bendigo; and Jane Bendigo. Besides his parents there are four sisters: Arlene Koppenhaver, wife of Mark Koppenhaver; Melva Morgan, wife of Arthur Morgan; Marion Moyer, wife of Boyd Moyer, all of Orwin; and Dorothy Thompson, wife of Leonard Thompson, of Philadelphia.

Mr. Bendigo was a well-known musician and was the leader and master of ceremonies for the well-known “Fabulous Dutchman,” who are popular entertainers at parks and in parades, as well as picnics and other public gatherings. He was a member of the Orwin Gun Club, Orwin Fire Company, and the Muir Fire Company.

The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock from his late residence at Orwin, Services will be conducted by Pastor Israel Yost of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Reinerton, of which the deceased was a recently confirmed member. Interment will be made in the Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery at Orwin.
