Walter Albert Evitts (1884-1965) grew up in Specktown, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania and married Mabel Eliza Riegle (1883-1964), his next door neighbor. In the late 1950s the snapshot shown above was taken at the Riegle-Dietrich homestead where Mabel was raised. Helen [Hoffman] Dietrich (1895-1977), Mabel’s niece, is at left in the photo, Mabel in the center, and Walter at right.
On frequent trips to the Riegle-Dietrich homestead from their home in Lansdowne, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Walter, a carpenter by trade, would bring his tools and do needed repairs and improvements. After completing his work the family would sit down to dinner in the kitchen, before Uncle Walter and Aunt Mabel returned home to Lansdowne.
In posing for this photo, Walter leaned over too far, got caught in the folding chair, and ripped his trousers.
Repairs were needed which the carpenter could not do himself, so Mabel, an accomplished seamstress, decided to fix the trousers right there in the kitchen where the light was good. Note that the old sewing machine sits right behind Mabel.
Everyone got a good laugh out of that, and the cameraman (yours truly) was right there to document the event.
