50 PLANES WILL HELP DEDICATE ROBINSON FIELD
Millersburg, Juyl 7 [1930] – Robinson Field, three miles east of here, the only airport in the Lykens Valley, will be dedicated Saturday and Sunday with an air circus in which fifty planes are expected to participate.
Requests to send ships for the event have been sent to the War and Navy Departments by the Millersburg Lions Club and the Lykens Rotary Club.
A two-day program has been arranged by Marion U. Gilbert, youthful proprietor of the field and Pat Brooke and Jess Jones, of the Lancaster, Bethlehem and Coatesville airports. Following registration of the pilots and planes Saturday morning a forty-five minute tour of the Lykens Valley will be made, with the craft flying in formation, beginning at noon. Passengers will be carried on the tour.
Flag raising ceremonies will take place following the tour and from 2 to 6:30 o’clock will be held at the air events, which include races over a triangular course, parachute jumping, stunting and formation flights.
Banquet in Evening
At a banquet at 8:30 o’clock at the Hotel Lykens, prizes will be awarded to the winning pilots and aviation authorities are expected to speak Sunday afternoon’s events will begin at 1 o’clock. Loud speakers will be installed on the field to aid announcements.
The field was named in honor of F. A. Robinson, California mail pilot, who was killed when his plane fell in the Susquehanna River, September 20, 1920 [sic], after striking the telephone cables that stretch across the river to the top of Mt. Patrick. Fog caused the accident. Parts of the wrecked plane are on display at Robinson Field.
The site for the airport was purchased last September by Dr. Martin Ulrich, local physician, for his grandson pilot, Marion U. Gilbert. Gilbert was graduated from the Millersburg High School in the class of 1927 and attended Bliss Electrical School, at Washington. He trained at the Lancaster Airport and is a licensed transport pilot.
