“HOPS” HOPS HERE TO ASK FOLKS TO COME
Selinsgrovers Invited to Attend Opening of the Airport at Millersburg 12-13 [July 1930]
Marion U. “Hops” Gilbert flew up the Susquehanna Valley to drop from his plane a letter to The Times inviting his local kin and all the folks for miles around to attend the festivities incident to the dedication of Robinson Field airport at Millersburg Saturday and Sunday.
“Hops” is the grandson of Dr. Marion Ulrich, vererable practitioner of medicine in that down-river town and brother of Mrs. Diana Breimeier, Miss Izora Ulrich, Mrs. William C. Moyer, Henry Ulrich, and Reuben L. Ulrich.
When “Hops” became airminded the other year, his grandfather not only bought him and airplane, but also a farm, which has been developed as Robinson Field.
Burgess Hay Bowman will raise the Colors at the airport at 1:30 Saturday afternoon, inaugurating a program of air races and stunt flying for that afternoon and Sunday afternoon and including a banquet Saturday night at the Lykens Hotel.
The letter to The Times, dropped form the Gilbert airplane, was seen falling by Billy Haas, youthful son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Haas, former residents of Millersburg and now residing here [Selinsgrove]. The lad retrieved the scroll quickly and delivered it just as promptly.
As a reward for his good turn, Billy has been given a pass and is to go along down to Millersburg with Arthur Miller of The Times staff, to help cover the big story.
