An undated photograph by Charles Noll of the cannon at West Park, Millersburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The view is looking north.
The following information about the cannon was provided in the Millersburg Bicentennial Book, 2007:
On October 1, 1897, a cannon was taken from a railroad car and placed on the platform at Millersburg, which caused quite a stir. It was soon learned that W. B. Meetch had obtained the cannon through his frtiend, Congressman Olmstead. Meetch was a local businessman and Dauphin County Prison Warden. The cannon, a condemned government relic, came from Governor’s Island, New York.
The cannon weighs 3,500 pounds, is 10 feet long, and has a four and a half inch bore. The cannon was intended for the public square in West Park, but first permission had to be obtained from Borough council. Then a suitable base had to be fashioned to mount the cannon. Unfortunately, there are no records to indicate when the cannon was dedicated or if it was meant to be a Civil War monument. The cannon has stood in West Park, pointing west toward the Susquehanna River, since 1897.
