Monroe Klinger, 59, of near Gratz, who accidentally shot himself in the abdomen at his home Thursday night, died in the Harrisburg Hospital Friday at 1:50 P. M. [8 January 1938].
His wife heard the report of a shotgun about 7 o’clock Thursday evening, and ran to her husband’s room where she found him lying on the floor wounded with the shotgun beside him.
He was the son of Francis Klinger and Harriet [Troutman] Klinger, and was born 11 March 1879 in Jordan Township, Northumberland County. He was married to Lizzie Artz, who survives along with four sons, Wallace Klinger, of Lykens; Stanley Klinger, of Millersburg; Allen Klinger, of Northumberland; and Blair Klinger, of Gratz. Three daughters: Bessie Klinger, Mrs. Clayton Hartman, of Hegins; Mattie Klinger, Mrs. Luther Daniels, of Lykens; Elsie Klinger, Mrs. George Shade, of Gratz. 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Four brothers and three sisters also survive.
He was engaged in the huckstering business for many years and had a wide acquaintanceship. He was a member of the Lutheran Church, Gratz; the Lodge of Elks, Sunbury; and the I. O. O. F., Gratz.
The funeral was held Tuesday from his late home at 2:00 P. M., with Rev. W. Z. Artz officiating. Interment was made in the Gratz Cemetery. The Elks Club of Sunbury, held their ritual at the grave.
Undertaker Marlin Reed, of Pillow, had charge of the arrangements.
