A young man of Muir, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, decided to give his wife-to-be a wardrobe of new clothing, so he burglarized a store in Tremont and walked away with about $500 in merchandise. After presenting the “gift”, the woman told her father, who informed the State Police. By escaping into the mountains, the young man eluded the police for a time, but when he retured to Muir, he was arrested and jailed. He was also jilted by the bride-to-be. The story was told in the Lykens Standard of November 20, 1925:
ROBS STORE FOR TROUSSEAU; LOSES BRIDE-TO-BE; IN JAIL
John Miller of Muir, a small town northeast of Tower City, who was about to be married has lost his bride-to-be, Miss Mary Sipp of Muir, because he went to Tremont last Thursday evening and robbed the store of Wasserberg Brothers in ordere to secure a trousseau for his intended wife.
Miller returned to the Sipp home where he boarded on Friday and explained to Miss Sipp how he secured the apparel which he turned over to her. She informed her father and he notified the state police. Now Miller, lodged in the Schuylkill County Jail, has not only lost his freedom but has also been jilted by Miss Sipp.
James Sipp, intended father-in-law of Miller furnished the information what led to Miller’s arrest. When te State Police arrived at the Sipp home early Saturday morning, Miller was not there, but a pile of merchandise was burning in the yard. The police searched the mountains for Miller but were unable to locate hom. Then they went away. Miller from his hiding place in the mountains waw the police leave. Believing he was safe at the Sipp home, he returned there. The police went back to that place again Sunday morning at 4:30 and found Miller in bed. Miller gave himself up without struggle.
He was taken to the Dauphin County Jail and Monday was given a hearing before Justice of the Peace Freeman of Tremont for the robbery of apparel from the store in the amount of $500.
Miller confessed to the robbery and in default of bail was committed to jail.
